Conlextions

by Lex Friedman at Lex.Games. He's got a lot of great games on his site. There are subscriptions available but you can play most games, including Conlextions for free. I find it harder than NYT Connections. Why not support the independent web with your time, you may, someday, decide it's worth a subscription.

NYT Connections

I don't need to tell you about this one. Edited by Wyna Liu. They may not have started this genre, but, at least in the US, they popularized it.

Instructions

  1. Populate Tiles. There are two options: Automatic and Manual

    1. Automatic: You can click Get Current to get today's puzzle, or enter a date and click Get Older to get that day's puzzle.

    2. Manual: Click Add Wordsโ€ฆ and then type in your 16 words and click the Done button.

  2. Once the tiles appear, drag and drop a tile onto another. In Shift mode (default), the dragged tile is inserted at the target position and all tiles in between shift over to fill the gap. In Swap mode, the two tiles simply exchange positions. Use the radio buttons below to switch modes.

  3. Click a color circle to select it (indicated by a border), then click tiles to mark them with that color. Click a colored tile again to remove that color. Each tile can have up to 4 colors. A single color fills the entire tile.

  4. A color can be applied to more than 4 tiles, this can help you figure out categories when some tiles can be in multiple categories.

  5. Click the ๐Ÿ”’ checkbox next to a row to lock it. Locked rows cannot be moved or colored.

  6. Click Clear All Unlocked to remove all color markings from unlocked tiles.

  7. Check Hide Locks to hide the row lock controls, giving tiles more horizontal space. This is enabled by default on narrow screens (phones).

  8. Click Hide Instructions to hide this section.

  9. Click Save Preferences to save all your preferences so that the site reflects your choices each time you visit. Please note that if you save your preferences with Hide Instructions checked you will see instructions once each time the instructions change. All other visits will respect the preference.

This tool helps you visualize groupings by dragging tiles and marking them with colors; you play the actual game on the originating site.
